There are dogs, and then there are heroes—K9 Hurricane was both.

K9 Hurricane was a U.S. Secret Service Special Operations dog who served with unmatched courage, most famously stopping an intruder who breached the White House fence in 2014. For his bravery, he received national and international recognition, including the PDSA Order of Merit, often referred to as the animals’ OBE. But beyond his accolades, Hurricane’s greatest legacy may be the lives he’s touched since retirement—through the nonprofit created in his honor, Hurricane’s Heroes.

Supporting the Retired K9s Who’ve Given Us Everything

Hurricane’s Heroes is a nonprofit dedicated to providing medical care and support for retired working K9s. These dogs often retire without benefits, despite spending their lives in service to our communities and country. Many face serious medical challenges—arthritis, chronic pain, and mobility loss—that come with years of physical exertion and danger.

This organization bridges the gap, ensuring these loyal partners receive the care, dignity, and comfort they deserve in retirement.

My Role in Helping Hurricane

I had the profound honor of being part of the veterinary team that supported K9 Hurricane during his retirement, helping manage his mobility issues and chronic pain as he aged. Through rehabilitation, pain management, and mobility-focused therapies, we worked to give him the comfort and quality of life worthy of a hero.

Caring for K9 Hurricane wasn’t just a clinical responsibility—it was a privilege. His resilience, spirit, and heart were inspiring. Even in his senior years, he carried himself with the presence of a true professional.

Saying Goodbye and Carrying On His Legacy

In early 2025, K9 Hurricane passed away peacefully, surrounded by those who loved and honored him. I’m grateful to have been part of the team that helped guide him through his final chapter with the same care and dignity he gave throughout his career.

“I want his story to live on. So that’s how I pay it forward for him: to just keep telling his story. And if I keep doing that, then he’s always still here.”

– Marshall Mirarchi, K9 Hurricane’s partner and dad.

His story was featured in many news sources, including The Washington Post, a testament to how much he meant—not only to those of us who knew him, but to the country he protected.

Today, K9 Hurricane’s legacy lives on through the tireless work of Hurricane’s Heroes. Every retired K9 they support is a continuation of his story. Every dollar raised, every treatment funded, is a reminder that these dogs matter, and that their service doesn’t end when the uniform comes off.
