For years, glucosamine and chondroitin have been the go-to joint supplements recommended for dogs with osteoarthritis. But as veterinary research continues to evolve, so do our treatment strategies, and not all supplements live up to the hype.
A recent systematic review published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science (Goggs et al., 2022) evaluated the evidence supporting various canine osteoarthritis nutraceuticals. The findings? Glucosamine and chondroitin show little to no reliable clinical benefit when used in dogs with osteoarthritis. This has led many veterinarians, including myself, to move toward more effective, evidence-backed alternatives.
Why I Don’t Routinely Recommend Omega-3s for Joint Support in Dogs
While Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) have strong scientific support for their anti-inflammatory effects and benefits in canine osteoarthritis, I don’t routinely recommend them as a nutraceutical in my practice. The reason isn’t due to lack of evidence; it’s the opposite. However, there are two key practical concerns I encounter:
- Most dogs with OA are overweight or obese, and Omega-3 supplements are calorie-dense oils. Adding more fat-based calories can work against our weight management goals, which are critical for joint health.
- The most commonly reported side effect is loose stools or gastrointestinal upset, which tends to occur in dogs with more sensitive digestive systems or when higher doses are needed to reach therapeutic levels.
For these reasons, I reserve Omega-3 supplementation for select cases where weight is well-managed and GI tolerance is not an issue.
Here’s what I now recommend in my practice based on both science and clinical outcomes:
1. Undenatured Type II Collagen (UC-II®)
Product: Flexadin Advanced
Unlike traditional joint supplements, undenatured type II collagen works by supporting immune tolerance to collagen breakdown products inside the joint. This helps reduce inflammation and joint pain at the source.
- UC-II® is backed by multiple studies showing improved mobility and reduced lameness in dogs with OA.
- Just one small chew daily provides a low-dose, high-impact approach.
2. Egg Shell Membrane
Product: Movoflex Advanced
Egg shell membrane is a natural source of glycosaminoglycans, collagen, and bioactive proteins that support joint health. It’s been shown to reduce joint pain and stiffness and is a great option for dogs who are sensitive to traditional supplements.
- Movoflex Advanced also includes hyaluronic acid and astaxanthin (a potent antioxidant), making it an excellent all-in-one joint support formula.
- Most dogs find it palatable and easy to give daily.
3. Ursolic Acid for Muscle Support
Product: Ursolyx
For dogs dealing with chronic joint disease, maintaining muscle mass is crucial. Ursolic acid is a natural compound found in herbs and fruit peels that has been shown to support muscle strength and reduce muscle wasting in aging mammals.
- I recommend Ursolyx, a veterinary-formulated product specifically designed to support muscle health and recovery in dogs.
- It’s particularly helpful in senior dogs or those recovering from orthopedic or neurologic injury.
Why This Matters
When we move beyond outdated joint supplements and embrace evidence-based nutraceuticals, we can significantly improve a dog’s comfort, mobility, and quality of life. I’ve seen meaningful improvements in many patients using this updated combination of UC-II®, eggshell membrane, and ursolic acid, and I no longer rely on glucosamine and chondroitin as first-line options.
If you’re unsure which supplements are right for your dog or want to revisit your pet’s current joint care plan, I’m happy to help guide you through options that make a real difference.
