Since 2017, I’ve been using extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) as a non-invasive, evidence-based tool to treat musculoskeletal conditions in both dogs and cats. From osteoarthritis (OA) and tendinopathies to lumbosacral (LS) disease, ESWT has become a cornerstone of my multimodal treatment approach, helping pets move more comfortably and recover more efficiently.

At Veterinary Referral Associates, we utilize PulseVet, a focused electrohydraulic shockwave system with the most robust body of research supporting its use in veterinary medicine.

What is Focused Shockwave Therapy?

ESWT involves delivering high-energy acoustic waves to a targeted area of the body. These sound waves stimulate biological healing responses, including:

  • Increased blood flow
  • Reduced inflammation
  • Pain modulation through nerve desensitization
  • Stimulated tissue regeneration (tendon, bone, and cartilage)

We use focused shockwave, which delivers energy to a precise depth and location, unlike radial systems that diffuse energy broadly and shallowly. The PulseVet electrohydraulic generator provides consistent, high-energy treatments that reach deep structures, making it ideal for advanced orthopedic applications. Additionally, the PulseVet system is the ESWT system with the most peer reviewed published research supporting its use.

Conditions We Treat with ESWT

Shockwave therapy has shown excellent results in a range of conditions in both dogs and cats:

  • Osteoarthritis (OA): reducing pain and improving mobility
  • Tendinopathy and Ligament Injuries: including biceps, supraspinatus, Achilles, iliopsoas, and patellar tendon issues
  • Lumbosacral Disease (LS): helps manage back pain and dysfunction in senior pets and working dogs
  • Non-union fractures and chronic wounds: in select cases

Treatments are typically spaced 2–3 weeks apart, and most pets benefit from one to three sessions, depending on the severity of their condition.

Minimal Stress with Awake Treatment

With the development of the X-trode treatment head, many patients can be treated awake, without sedation or anesthesia. This makes the process safer, faster, and easier, especially for senior pets or those with co-morbidities. Treatment sessions typically take just a few minutes, and many pets are up and walking comfortably immediately afterward.

Combining ESWT with tPEMF for Enhanced Outcomes

In some cases, we enhance our treatment protocols by pairing ESWT with targeted pulsed electromagnetic field therapy (tPEMF) using the Assisi Loop. This combination provides a powerful one-two punch:

  • ESWT jumpstarts the body’s regenerative response
  • tPEMF supports anti-inflammatory healing between treatments

tPEMF can be administered in-clinic or prescribed for at-home use, giving pet owners a way to support their pet’s recovery between visits.

Having used PulseVet focused shockwave technology since 2017, I’ve treated hundreds of pets with a wide range of orthopedic and soft tissue conditions. Its safety, efficacy, and research-backed results make it one of the most valuable tools in veterinary rehabilitation today.

If your dog or cat is dealing with joint pain, soft tissue injury, or spinal discomfort, and you’re looking for a non-invasive, drug-free treatment option, shockwave therapy may be the solution.
