This year marks the 10th anniversary of Paws of Honor, a nonprofit organization that holds a special place in my heart and in the hearts of countless military and law enforcement families across the country. Since its founding, Paws of Honor has been dedicated to a simple yet profound mission: to provide veterinary care and support for retired working K9s who have served our nation.

These courageous dogs have spent their lives protecting us by detecting explosives, patrolling borders, supporting special operations, and more. When their service ends, however, many are retired without any ongoing medical benefits, despite the wear and tear that comes from years of demanding work.

That’s where Paws of Honor steps in.

The Mission: Care for Retired K9 Heroes

Paws of Honor (www.pawsofhonor.org) ensures that these deserving dogs receive high-quality veterinary care throughout their retirement, at no cost to their handlers. This includes:

  • Preventive care (vaccines, wellness exams)
  • Chronic condition management (arthritis, organ disease, etc.)
  • Surgeries, diagnostics, and medications
  • End-of-life care when the time comes

All of this is made possible by donor support and a growing national network of veterinary hospitals and professionals who believe these dogs deserve nothing less.

My Involvement: A Privilege and Responsibility

I’m honored and grateful to now be serving my third year on the Board of Directors for Paws of Honor. Being involved in this organization has been one of the most meaningful chapters of my professional life.

As a veterinarian specializing in sports medicine and rehabilitation, I’ve had the privilege of personally caring for many of these retired working dogs, helping manage chronic pain, mobility issues, and aging-related conditions. It’s incredibly rewarding to give back to animals who gave everything in their working years, often in silence and without recognition.

To be part of a team that ensures their final years are comfortable, supported, and full of love is a privilege I don’t take for granted.

A Stronger Mission Through Collaboration: Paws of Honor × Hurricane’s Heroes

One of the most exciting developments in recent years has been the growing collaboration between Paws of Honor and Hurricane’s Heroes, another incredible nonprofit that supports retired law enforcement and military working dogs. Founded in honor of the legendary U.S. Secret Service K9 Hurricane, Hurricane’s Heroes shares the same mission of making sure these dogs are not forgotten once their service ends. Together, our organizations are combining resources and expertise to expand access to care, reach more retired K9s, and provide comprehensive support across the country. It’s a powerful example of what’s possible when groups with a shared vision come together to honor these heroes in their golden years.

Celebrating 10 Years of Impact

In its first decade, Paws of Honor has helped hundreds of retired K9s across the country and the need continues to grow. As we celebrate this milestone year, we’re reflecting not just on what’s been achieved, but also looking ahead to what more we can do.

Whether you’re a veterinary professional, a donor, or a dog lover, I encourage you to get involved. Every contribution, large or small, helps support a dog who once stood between danger and safety.

To every retired working K9: Thank you for your service. And to everyone supporting this mission: Thank you for helping us care for these incredible heroes, just as they cared for us.
