As pet owners, we all want our animals to stay healthy, active, and comfortable throughout their lives. A recent scientific review article I co-authored with Dr. Curtis Dewey helps us better understand how the nervous system works in mammals and what might happen when important nerve pathways don’t function normally. This topic may sound complicated, but its impact could be very real for your pets.

Here’s an easy-to-understand breakdown of what we covered and why it matters.

What Is the Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) Pathway?

The Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) pathway is one of the body’s natural systems that helps nerves grow, stay healthy, and communicate with each other. Healthy nerves allow pets to:

  • Move normally
  • Feel and respond to touch
  • Learn and remember
  • Stay coordinated

If this pathway isn’t working correctly, the nervous system may not function as it should.

What Our Review Article Examined

We reviewed research examining how the NGF pathway behaves when it becomes dysregulated, meaning it doesn’t function properly. We focused on:

  • How NGF levels and related proteins change
  • How those changes might affect nerve cell health
  • What this could mean for overall brain and nerve function

While this was a scientific review rather than a single experiment, it helps build a foundation for understanding how nerve problems may develop in animals.

Key Concepts

  • When the NGF pathway is disrupted, nerve cells may not grow or work the way they should.
  • This can interfere with how nerves send and receive signals, which may affect movement, coordination, sensation, or even behavior.
  • Understanding these changes is important for diagnosing and treating neurological problems in pets.

Why This Matters for Pet Owners

Even though this information is scientific, it has real-world meaning for everyday pet health. Nerve-related issues can cause a wide range of symptoms. Pet owners should pay attention to changes such as:

  • Difficulty jumping or climbing
  • Trouble with coordination
  • Sudden personality or behavior changes
  • Sensitivity to touch
  • Trouble getting around familiar places

These signs don’t always indicate a serious problem, but they are worth mentioning to your veterinarian.

What We Still Need to Learn

Our review article highlights areas where more research is needed, including:

  • How NGF pathway problems show up in specific dog and cat diseases
  • Whether certain breeds or species are more at risk
  • How future treatments might target these pathways (either positively or negatively)

This knowledge will help veterinarians better support pets with neurological conditions.

Final Thoughts

I was honored to co-author this review article with Dr. Curtis Dewey, a respected colleague and friend. Our goal is to help expand the understanding of nerve-related health in animals so veterinarians can continue improving the care they provide.

While the science is complex, the message is simple: healthy nerves are essential for a healthy pet. By staying observant and working closely with your veterinarian, you can help your pet stay active, comfortable, and happy throughout their life.

  1. thank you…my dog had one Librela shot in mid -July, threw up the next day. Three weeks out she was jumping on the stairs like she normally does and falling but not seeming to register or feel pain. Her balance went off and her hind quarters atrophied. 2 months out she had a vestibular event and bacterial ear I infection. She had started sundowning about a month after the Librela as well as a host of other symptoms like inappetence and polydipsia..she also went deaf. I’ve fought hard to keep her alive. She’s almost 5 month clear of Librela..no longer sundowns at night, eating normally finally.. she’s walking 3 plus miles a day at nearly 15 and has a pep in her step but she does have after effects like deafness.

blocking NGF is a very very bad idea and Librela should be removed from the market.
