Hi, I’m Matt Brunke, DVM, DACVSMR (Canine)

Welcome! I’m Dr. Matt Brunke, a veterinarian who specializes in canine sports medicine and rehabilitation. My job is all about helping dogs (and cats) move better, feel stronger, and get back to doing what makes them happy, whether that’s chasing a ball, working in the field, or simply enjoying comfortable walks with their family.

What is sports medicine and rehab for dogs?

Think of it like sports medicine for people but designed for pets. I focus on:

  • Pets with injuries (muscle, tendon, ligament, joint, or spine)
  • Pets with arthritis or chronic pain
  • Pets recovering from orthopedic or neurologic surgery
  • Sporting, working, and active dogs who need performance care
  • Older pets who need help staying mobile and comfortable

My goal is not just to treat pain, but to understand why a pet is painful or not moving well, and then create a plan to fix or manage it.

What does that look like in real life?

I start with a very detailed movement and physical exam, often watching how a pet walks, trots, turns, and rises. From there, I may use:

  • Advanced imaging or diagnostics (when needed)
  • Targeted rehabilitation exercises
  • Manual therapy and mobility work
  • Regenerative and interventional treatments
  • Thoughtful use of medications, injections, or other therapies

Every pet is different, so every plan is individualized. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach here.

Why this blog?

I created this blog to help:

  • Pet owners better understand their pet’s pain and mobility problems
  • Veterinarians and rehab professionals explore evidence-based approaches
  • Anyone curious about how science, movement, and medicine come together to help animals live better lives

I believe strongly in clear explanations, good science, and honest conversations, especially when things are complex or confusing.

Thanks for being here. I’m glad you found your way to this space, and I hope the information here helps you and your dog move forward, one step at a time.
